My Summer Interning at CREAR

Hi there! My name is Sofia Baeza and I am one of the 2024 summer interns at Asociación CREAR. As my internship and time in Sámara comes to an end I thought this would be a great opportunity to talk about my experiences at CREAR. I was able to connect with Asociación CREAR through the University of Washington, where I am about to enter my fourth year as a communications, political science, and law, society, and justice student. Through this study-abroad program, I had the chance to seek out an internship, and while I was open to various opportunities, I felt that Asociación CREAR was the best fit for me. Given my background as a native Spanish speaker and the organization’s mission being something in which I was deeply passionate about, I felt that CREAR was an ideal match for my interests and skills. 

Since arriving in Costa Rica, I’m grateful to say that my expectations about the experience and the nature of my work were not only met but quickly surpassed. As an intern at CREAR some of my daily tasks include that I get to work closely with the children who come to classes, I get to assist our teachers during and prior to class time, and I get a front row seat to all the planning and hard work that goes on behind the scenes at the office. 

Getting to work with the children of Samara and El Torito, who are excited, energetic, and eager to learn, turns class time into a dynamic and rewarding adventure. One of my favorite memories of my internship experience was getting to teach art with my fellow intern, Siara. Together, we had a new and exciting opportunity to design activities that allowed the children to express their creativity. It was truly heartwarming to see how, even though we weren’t their usual teachers, the children remained exceptionally attentive, respectful, and intentional in their behavior, which made our role so much more enjoyable and effective.

Working with the fantastic team at CREAR, who consistently go the extra mile to address the needs of both the children and the community, has been an incredibly inspiring and fulfilling experience. One of my fondest memories from the internship was assisting the staff with the bi-annual Art Exposition. Even though classes were on break for the week, every team member came in daily to transform the office into a stunning art gallery, where each piece was carefully labeled and displayed for the children and their families to enjoy. Observing the event firsthand highlighted the vital role CREAR plays in the lives of these children and provided me with a deep appreciation for the organization early in my internship.

I am profoundly grateful for my time working and learning at Asociación CREAR; it has truly been one of the most rewarding and enriching experiences of my life. Although it saddens me to think about saying goodbye to the incredible people I’ve met here after nine weeks, I am proud to have contributed to an organization so committed to its mission of offering free, high-quality supplemental education while also accomplishing so much more within the community. It is evident that CREAR’s history and ongoing impact are deeply intertwined with the needs of the community, and I am eager and excited to see the future achievements of both the children and the organization.

Hola! Mi nombre es Sofía Baeza y soy una de las pasantes de verano 2024 en Asociación CREAR. A medida que mi pasantía y mi tiempo en Sámara llegan a su fin, pensé que sería una gran oportunidad para hablar sobre mis experiencias en CREAR. Pude conectar con Asociación CREAR a través de la Universidad de Washington, donde estoy a punto de comenzar mi cuarto año como estudiante de comunicaciones, ciencia política y derecho, sociedad y justicia. A través de este programa de estudio en el extranjero, tuve la oportunidad de buscar una pasantía, y aunque estaba abierta a varias oportunidades, sentí que Asociación CREAR era la mejor opción para mí. Dado mi trasfondo como hablante nativa de español y la misión de la organización siendo algo en lo que estaba profundamente apasionada, sentí que CREAR era una combinación ideal para mis intereses y habilidades.

Desde que llegué a Costa Rica, me alegra decir que mis expectativas sobre la experiencia y la naturaleza de mi trabajo no solo se cumplieron, sino que rápidamente se superaron. Como pasante en CREAR, algunas de mis tareas diarias incluyen trabajar de cerca con los niños que vienen a las clases, asistir a nuestros profesores durante y antes de las clases, y tener un asiento en primera fila para toda la planificación y el trabajo arduo que ocurre detrás de escena en la oficina.

Trabajar con los niños de Sámara y El Torito, que son entusiastas, enérgicos y ansiosos por aprender, convierte el tiempo en clase en una aventura dinámica y gratificante. Uno de mis recuerdos favoritos de mi experiencia como pasante fue enseñar arte con mi compañera pasante, Siara. Juntas, tuvimos la oportunidad nueva y emocionante de diseñar actividades que permitieran a los niños expresar su creatividad. Fue realmente conmovedor ver cómo, aunque no éramos sus profesoras habituales, los niños se mantuvieron excepcionalmente atentos, respetuosos e intencionales en su comportamiento, lo que hizo que nuestro rol fuera mucho más agradable y efectivo.

Conocer y trabajar con el increíble equipo de CREAR, que constantemente va más allá para satisfacer las necesidades de los niños y la comunidad, ha sido tanto inspirador como gratificante. Uno de mis recuerdos más preciados de la pasantía fue ayudar al personal con la Exposición de Arte bianual. Aunque las clases estaban en receso por la semana, cada miembro del equipo venía diariamente para transformar la oficina en una impresionante galería de arte, donde cada pieza estaba cuidadosamente etiquetada y exhibida para que los niños y sus familias la disfrutaran. Observar el evento de primera mano resaltó el papel vital que CREAR juega en la vida de estos niños y me proporcionó una profunda apreciación por la organización desde temprano en mi pasantía.

Estoy profundamente agradecida por mi tiempo trabajando y aprendiendo en Asociación CREAR; ha sido verdaderamente una de las experiencias más gratificantes y enriquecedoras de mi vida. Aunque me entristece pensar en decir adiós a las personas increíbles que he conocido aquí después de nueve semanas, estoy orgullosa de haber contribuido a una organización tan comprometida con su misión de ofrecer educación suplementaria gratuita y de alta calidad, mientras también logra mucho más dentro de la comunidad. Es evidente que la historia y el impacto continuo de CREAR están profundamente entrelazados con las necesidades de la comunidad, y estoy ansiosa y emocionada de ver los futuros logros tanto de los niños como de la organización.
