Magnifique! Sharing the gift of art with our families

CREAR´s art classes serve as a space to allow children to express themselves. Rekha, our dynamic new art teacher, has done an amazing job of coming up with fun and creative lessons which allow our students to get their hands messy and create something that they are proud of.

This year, our programming has been endorsed through a grant from the Costa Rican government´s Ministry of Childhood and Culture, and their “Cultural Points” program. Our CREAR workshops have covered a wide variety of topics and the art of our students reflects this dynamism. Our student’s work includes everything from painted rock insects to a hand crafted coral reef. After many months of hard work, our CREAR kids had built up a gallery-full of art ready to be shown off to their families.

As the artwork was ready to be admired, we felt called to turn the office space into an elegant art gallery to honor the creativity of our students, promote culture within our community and offer our families and the general public the opportunity to learn about our projects.

In the week leading up to the expo, hours were spent preparing the gallery. We began to move furniture, hiding bookcases and placing large curtains over desks to create the feel of an art gallery instead of an office space. We relocated easels and began to hang the student’s self portraits. The library was turned into a jungle to display the art from the “Tropical Dry Forest” unit. A coral reef complete with small fish and octopi popped up in the middle of the office and student’s abstract hand blown straw paintings were displayed on the shelves. As Rekha was working to paint a backdrop for our coral display, the rest of the crew was working inside to put the finishing touches on our gallery. We also brewed up coffee and provided homemade snacks for our families to munch on while mulling over the art in addition to having a professional photographer present to take family portraits. Much thanks again to Rekha and also to our volunteers Gail and Lu who worked especially hard to turn the office into an art gallery. The heart and dedication they show for our students is what truly makes CREAR a special program.

The stage was set and on the afternoon of July 29th families began to arrive to see the stunning work of the young artists. Although the gallery was set to open at 2:00 pm, some of our families were waiting anxiously at the gates at 1:45, hoping to be the first to see the art on display. As people began to arrive here at CREAR they snacked on empanadas and coffee while they waited for the gallery to open. Our students were visibly excited at the opportunity to show off their work and grabbed the hands of their family members to lead them to the art.

The excited artists and their families explored the gallery for hours and filled the CREAR space with lots of great energy. The families were so glad to finally see their children’s artwork and the students were enthused to show it off. Meanwhile, outside the gallery, a special friend of CREAR, David Rosenthal, offered his professional photography services by taking portraits of the families. It was a lovely detail that our families really appreciated.

For a program like CREAR to work, we have to have engaged families. We have been working for years to include not just our students, but also their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters. This Is why we plan things like an art expo or a mural painting project. A few weeks after the art expo our families re-convened here at CREAR to beautify our space with a new collaborative mural. Once again, Rekha had created a beautiful design and Lu had helped her to frame an outline on the wall. Our families arrived with enthusiasm on August 16th (The day after Costa Rican Mother’s day) to add more color to our CREAR space. We had people from many different families come together to help with this project and it was very gratifying to watch everyone interact warmly, truly reflecting the family we have built here at CREAR So many people showed up that we were limited in the amount of people who could work on the wall at one time. We began working in shifts, while some people painted the mural, other students and families played jenga and other table games until it was their turn to paint. It was delightful to see moms and dads helping out not just their kids, but other CREAR kids as well. In this moment we felt a real sense of the CREAR community being recognized right in front of us.

“El arte tiene el papel en la educación de ayudar a los niños a ser más como ellos mismos en lugar de más como todos los demás” - Sydney Gurewitz Clemens

Las clases de arte de CREAR sirven como un espacio para que la niñez se exprese. Rekha, nuestra maestra de arte muy dinámica ha hecho un trabajo increíble al facilitar lecciones divertidas y creativas que permiten a nuestros estudiantes ensuciarse las manos y crear algo de lo que están orgullosos.

Este año, el proyecto Ser Feliz Creciendo Feliz, ha sido financiada a través de una beca del Ministerio de Cultura y Juventud del gobierno de Costa Rica, y su programa “Puntos de Cultura”. Los talleres de arte e inglés de Asociación CREAR han cubierto una amplia variedad de temas y el arte de nuestros estudiantes refleja este dinamismo. El trabajo de nuestros estudiantes incluye de todo, desde insectos hechos de rocas pintados hasta un arrecife de coral hecho a mano. Después de muchos meses de arduo trabajo, nuestros niños y niñas de CREAR habían creado una galería llena de arte lista para mostrarla a sus familias.

Cuando las obras de arte estaban listas para ser admiradas, nos sentimos llamados a convertir el espacio de la oficina en una elegante galería de arte para honrar la creatividad de nuestros estudiantes, promover la cultura dentro de nuestra comunidad y ofrecer a nuestras familias y al público en general la oportunidad de aprender sobre nuestros proyectos.

En la semana anterior a la exposición, se dedicaron horas a preparar la galería. Comenzamos a mover muebles, escondiendo estanterías y colocando grandes cortinas sobre los escritorios para crear la sensación de una galería de arte en lugar de un espacio de oficina. Reubicamos caballetes y comenzamos a colgar los autorretratos de los estudiantes. La biblioteca se convirtió en una selva para exhibir el arte de la unidad "Bosque Seco Tropical". Un arrecife de coral con peces, pulpos y tiburones pequeños apareció en el medio de la oficina y las pinturas abstractas de soplo de colores con pajilla hecho a mano por parte de las y los estudiantes, se exhibieron en los estantes. Mientras Rekha estaba trabajando para pintar el fondo para nuestra exhibición de arrecifes de coral, el resto del equipo estaba trabajando adentro para dar los toques finales a nuestra galería. También preparamos café y proporcionamos bocadillos caseros para que nuestras familias comieran mientras reflexionaban sobre el arte, además de tener a David Rosenthal, como fotógrafo profesional presente para tomar retratos familiares. Muchas gracias de nuevo a Rekha, a Lucas, a Lucy y Andrea y también a nuestros voluntarios Gail y Lu que trabajaron especialmente duro para convertir la oficina en una galería de arte. El corazón y la dedicación que muestran por nuestros estudiantes es lo que realmente hace que CREAR sea un programa especial.

El escenario estaba listo y en la tarde del 29 de julio comenzaron a llegar las familias para ver el impresionante trabajo de los jóvenes artistas. Aunque la galería estaba programada para abrir a las 2:00 pm, algunas de nuestras familias esperaban ansiosamente en las puertas a la 1:45pm, con la esperanza de ser los primeros en ver el arte en exhibición. Cuando la gente empezó a llegar aquí a CREAR, comieron empanadas y café mientras esperaban que abriera la galería. Nuestros estudiantes estaban visiblemente emocionados por la oportunidad de mostrar su trabajo y tomaron las manos de los miembros de su familia para guiarlos hacia el arte.

Los emocionados artistas y sus familias exploraron la galería durante horas y llenaron el espacio CREAR con mucha energía. Las familias estaban muy contentas de ver finalmente la obra de arte de sus hijos e hijas, las y los estudiantes estaban entusiasmados de mostrarles. Mientras tanto, fuera de la galería, un amigo especial de CREAR, David Rosenthal, ofreció sus servicios de fotografía profesional tomando retratos de las familias. Fue un detalle encantador que nuestras familias realmente apreciaron.

Para que un programa como CREAR funcione, debemos tener familias comprometidas. Hemos trabajado durante años para incluir no solo a nuestros estudiantes, sino también a sus madres, padres, abuelos y abuelas, tías y tíos, hermanos y hermanas. Por eso planificamos eventos especiales como una exposición de arte o el proyecto de pintura mural. Unas semanas después de la exposición de arte, nuestras familias volvieron a reunirse aquí en CREAR para embellecer nuestro espacio con un nuevo mural colaborativo. Una vez más, Rekha había creado un hermoso diseño y Lu la había ayudado a enmarcar el contorno en la pared. Nuestras familias llegaron con entusiasmo el 16 de agosto (día después del día de la madre costarricense) para darle más color al espacio CREAR. Tuvimos gente de muchas familias diferentes que se unieron para ayudar con este proyecto y fue muy gratificante ver a todas las personas participantes interactuar afectuosamente, reflejando verdaderamente la familia que hemos construido aquí en CREAR. Comenzamos a trabajar por turnos, mientras algunas personas pintaban el mural, otros estudiantes y familias jugaban jenga y otros juegos de mesa hasta que les tocaba pintar. Fue hermoso ver a las mamás y los papás ayudar no solo a sus hijos e hijas, sino también a otros niños y niñas de CREAR. En este momento sentimos una sensación real de que la comunidad CREAR era reconocida justo frente a nosotros.
